Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (Gi)

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a fusion of Japanese Judo/Jiu Jitsu and Western Wrestling created in the 1920’s by the Gracie family in Brazil.

BJJ revolves around the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger, heavier opponent by using leverage and weight distribution, taking the fight to the ground and using a number of holds and submissions to defeat them.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is traditionally practised in a gi (kimono).

No Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Without the kimono to use for grips, No Gi differs from traditional BJJ in several ways.

Primarily, it tends to be a faster, more audience friendly sport because of its more relaxed rule set that opens up more possibilities for action.

It is often popular with those with an interest in wrestling, mixed martial-arts or disinterest in the formalities of the Gi and belt system associated with traditional martial arts.
